Preface

I have created this blog to post the daily installments I will be writing for the National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. The "competition" is intended to encourage people to write a "full novel," which is defined as "a continuous work of prose with a minimum word count of 50,000." The competition begins tomorrow and goes until November 30th. All of the details are on the official website at http://www.nanowrimo.org.

The time limitations imposed by the competition ensure that the materials will not be more than a very rough, first draft. If they have any value, the materials will require a lot of polishing before being ready for "prime time." But I love to write, and never seem to have enough time to do so. So I hope the pressure of participating in this event will force me to write.

I may not make it. I may burn out, run out of story, or encounter some external problem that saps my time and prevents me from finishing. But it's like running in your first marathon -- if you don't try, you'll never know if you can do it.

I have settled on a genre -- science fiction, and a location -- Jupiter. Beyond that, who knows? The project starts in four hours. Where the story will take me, I have no idea. But it should be an interesting journey. So, if you would like to come along for the ride, check in every couple of days to see what has happened.
